How much does it cost to buy or lease a propane tank when adding a gas fireplace?

In most of Asheville you may not need a propane tank at all — Montford, North Asheville, and the downtown core sit on natural-gas mains, which are metered, not stored, so there's nothing to lease or buy. Off the main, the tank is arranged with your propane supplier while we handle the regulator, piping, and connection.

First question: are you on the main?

Much of the city runs on natural gas, and where that's true the whole lease-or-buy question disappears — you get a meter and a line, not a tank sitting in the yard. Historic Montford and Biltmore Village homes are usually on it; a hillside lot past the last main is the common exception.

If you're one of those off-main properties, propane fills the gap, and then the tank belongs to a conversation with your fuel supplier, not with us. Since we're headquartered at 629 Emma Rd, a look at your gas situation is a short drive, not a road trip.

Lease, own, or share what's already there

Suppliers lease most tanks for a low or waived yearly fee as long as you buy propane from them, which keeps upfront cost down but ties you to their per-gallon price. Buying the tank outright costs more at the start and puts upkeep on you, but you're free to shop each fill.

Size follows total load, not the fireplace by itself. If a furnace or water heater already burns propane here, a new fireplace often shares the existing tank with no second tank needed — we calculate its demand and pass the figure to your supplier.

Where our license comes in

In North Carolina, connecting fuel is licensed work — a showroom can sell you a firebox but can't legally run the gas. We install and pressure-test the regulator, piping, and appliance connection, and pull the Buncombe County permit so an inspector signs off. Your supplier owns and sets a leased tank.
