Do I need a spark arrestor cap on my chimney?

It catches embers a hard-drafting fire can throw onto the roof — a real concern given how Weaverville's north-facing valley keeps things cold and the burning season long. It sheds the rain that freeze-thaw turns into crown cracks. And it blocks the squirrels and chimney swifts that nest in an open clay flue over the idle months, a blockage that becomes a smoke and carbon-monoxide problem at the first fall fire.
