Do I need an electrical outlet inside or near the fireplace for the blower and ignition?
If your fireplace has a blower or electronic ignition, yes — you need a 120V outlet, and code wants it inside the framed cavity or right behind the unit. Millivolt fireplaces with no blower need no power at all. We plan the outlet location during install so the cord is hidden and the fan and ignition have what they need.
When an outlet is required
Two things draw power at a fireplace: the blower fan and electronic (IPI) ignition. If your unit has either, it needs a standard 120V receptacle, and manufacturers specify where — usually inside the framing chase behind the firebox or in an adjacent accessible spot, so the whipped power cord stays hidden and safe. A true millivolt fireplace with a standing pilot and no blower needs nothing electrical; it self-generates its ignition current from the pilot flame.
Planning it before the wall closes
The time to place that outlet is during a new install or remodel, before drywall goes up. We coordinate it as part of the job — the receptacle location, the concealed routing, and clearances — so you're not staring at a cord draped across the hearth afterward. On a retrofit where there's no nearby power, adding a circuit is electrician's work; we scope it and bring in a licensed electrician while we handle everything that makes fire and heat.
