Can I plug an electric fireplace into a regular 120V outlet or does it need a dedicated circuit?

Most plug-in electric fireplaces run on a standard 120V outlet — but because a heater on high pulls around 1,500 watts (about 12.5 amps), it nearly fills a typical 15-amp circuit. So it should be on its own outlet, not sharing a breaker with other big loads, and never on an extension cord or power strip. Larger built-in models may need a dedicated 240V circuit.

The 1,500-watt reality

A plug-in electric fireplace like the Dimplex IgniteXL Bold draws about 5,000 BTU — roughly 1,500 watts, or 12.5 amps, on full heat. That's most of what a standard 15-amp, 120V circuit can safely carry. So while you can plug it into a normal wall outlet, that outlet shouldn't be sharing the breaker with a space heater, microwave, or anything else hungry, or you'll trip it. The flame-only summer mode sips power; it's the heater element that's the load.

No extension cords, ever

This is the one hard rule with electric fireplaces: plug straight into a wall receptacle, never an extension cord or power strip. The heater's sustained draw can overheat an undersized cord or a strip, and that's a genuine fire risk — the manufacturer's manual will say the same in bold. If the outlet you want to use is inconveniently placed, the right fix is a new receptacle, not a cord workaround.

When you need 240V or a dedicated circuit

Bigger built-in and linear electric fireplaces — the high-output ones — can require a dedicated circuit or even 240V hardwiring to run at full heat. That's a decision we flag before install so the wall is wired correctly. We're a hearth company, so the electrical circuit itself is handled by a licensed electrician we coordinate, while we set and finish the fireplace.
