Are there 240V electric fireplaces, and when do you need one?

Yes, but most homes never need one. 240-volt electric fireplaces exist mainly in larger, higher-output, and commercial linear models that push more heat than a 120-volt outlet can supply. A typical residential wall-mount or insert — like the Dimplex we show — runs on standard 120 volts and 1,500 watts, which is plenty for one room.

Why most homes stay at 120 volts

A standard 120-volt plug-in electric fireplace caps out around 1,500 watts and 5,000 BTU, because that's all a normal household outlet delivers. For the job most people want — ambiance plus taking the chill off a bedroom, den, or finished basement up to roughly 400 square feet — that's enough, and it's the simplest possible install: hang or recess the unit, plug it in.

Every electric model in our Asheville showroom, including the Dimplex IgniteXL Bold 50, is a 120-volt unit. Nine times out of ten that's exactly the right tool for the room.

When 240 volts actually earns its place

You step up to 240 volts when you want more heat than a wall outlet can push — bigger open rooms, tall great rooms, or long linear installs where the electric unit is doing real supplemental heavy lifting, and in a lot of commercial or hospitality settings. A 240-volt appliance can deliver noticeably higher wattage and BTU output because it isn't throttled by the 12.5-amp limit of a standard circuit.

The tradeoff is the wiring: 240 volts means a dedicated circuit and, on most units, a hardwired connection rather than a plug. That's a bigger electrical job than a simple receptacle.

Steady Flame installs and sets the fireplace; running a 240-volt dedicated circuit is licensed electrical work, so we bring in a licensed electrician to handle the wiring and coordinate it with the unit's rough-in. It's the same partnership approach we use across the board — we do what makes fire and heat, and we don't claim trades we don't hold.

Before you commit to a 240-volt model, though, ask the real question: even at higher output, electric heat goes dead in an outage.
