When hardwiring makes sense
Most plug-in electric fireplaces come with a cord because that's the easy, code-simple way to power a 120-volt heater. But a cord dangling out of a recessed or wall-mounted unit ruins the built-in look, so many models — particularly bigger linear units and some higher-wattage versions — are designed to be hardwired, wired straight into a junction box behind the fireplace with no visible cord.
Some larger units also run on a 240-volt circuit for more output, and those are typically hardwired by design. Whether yours can be hardwired depends on the specific model's instructions, so it's a per-unit answer, not a blanket yes.
