How many watts and amps does an electric fireplace draw?

On heat, a standard plug-in electric fireplace pulls about 1,500 watts — roughly 12.5 amps on a 120-volt outlet, right at the ceiling of what a home circuit safely runs continuously. On flame-only mode with the heater off, it sips just a few watts to light the LEDs. Our Dimplex IgniteXL Bold 50 sits in that 1,500-watt, roughly 5,000 BTU class.

Where the 1,500-watt number comes from

Nearly every residential plug-in electric fireplace — wall-mount, insert, or log canister — tops out around 1,500 watts on high heat. That's no coincidence: a standard 120-volt household outlet is the design limit, and 1,500 watts divided by 120 volts lands at about 12.5 amps. That's the same draw as a space heater or a hair dryer.

Heat off versus heat on

The wattage swings hard depending on mode. Run the flame effect alone — the summer or flame-only setting a lot of folks use year-round just for ambiance — and the unit draws only a handful of watts for its LEDs, basically nothing on your power bill. Flip the heater on and you jump to the full 1,500 watts.

So the honest way to picture it: it's a lamp most of the time and a space heater when you want warmth. If two people are running heaters and a microwave on the same circuit, that's where breakers trip.

What the amp draw means for your outlet

12.5 amps sits right at — a hair over, really — the 12-amp continuous limit of a standard 15-amp circuit, since code figures 80 percent of a circuit's rating for continuous loads. So a plug-in electric fireplace really wants an outlet that isn't already loaded down, and ideally its own circuit if you're building the wall around it.

That's the one place we bring in a licensed electrician — running or adding a dedicated circuit is their trade, not ours. We install the fireplace and coordinate the outlet so the cord reaches a proper receptacle, never an extension cord or power strip.
