Does a gas fireplace need electricity, and will it still work in a power outage?
It depends on the ignition. Gas fireplaces with a standing pilot or millivolt system need no electricity and keep making heat right through an outage. Units with electronic (IPI) ignition need power — but many carry battery backup that lights them when the grid is down. The blower always needs electricity, but the fire and its heat don't.

A millivolt or standing-pilot gas fireplace generates its own tiny current from the pilot flame — no outlet required — so it lights and heats with the grid completely down. The blower is the part that stops
Here's the honest nuance: even on a millivolt unit, the blower fan needs electricity. Lose power and you lose the fan — but not the fire. A direct-vent or vent-free fireplace still radiates and convects real heat into the room without the blower; it just doesn't push it as far.
