Does a gas fireplace need electricity, and will it still work in a power outage?
In Candler, the fuel varies — mains reach the Enka edge near Asheville, but out through Hominy Valley many homes are on propane — yet the outage answer never changes with fuel. A millivolt or standing-pilot fireplace needs no electricity and heats through a power failure; electronic ignition needs an outlet but usually takes a battery backup. Natural gas runs along the Enka-Candler edge closest to Asheville, but head out into Hominy Valley and you're generally on a propane tank — and on a propane property, a no-electricity millivolt fireplace is the natural backup, lighting off its own pilot with the grid down. Propane burns hotter per unit than natural gas and needs the right orifices and pressures, or it soots; setting that correctly is licensed work we permit with Buncombe County and pressure-test before we light it.
