Does a gas fireplace need electricity, and will it still work in a power outage?
In historic Flat Rock, whether a gas fireplace needs electricity depends on its ignition, not its age. A millivolt or standing-pilot unit needs no power and heats through an outage; an electronic-ignition model needs an outlet but usually carries a battery backup. Drop a sealed gas insert into one of the village's old open fireboxes and you keep the character while gaining outage-ready heat.
Old fireplaces, aging flues
Flat Rock's homes go back to the 1800s, and many still have oversized open masonry fireplaces with clay flue liners aged past their prime. Those open hearths pull cold-air drafts into the room and lose most of their heat up the chimney — the opposite of what you want in a power outage. A sealed gas insert fixes both: it seals the draft, actually heats the room, and with a millivolt valve it works with the grid completely down. We size and reline for the insert so the historic firebox keeps its look and gains real function.
Natural gas, preserved character
Flat Rock sits on natural-gas mains, so most conversions here run on utility gas, and the outage performance still comes down to ignition rather than fuel supply. If a power-out winter night worries you, we spec millivolt or battery-backup ignition and steer away from anything that dies without the grid. Extending or connecting the gas line is licensed work — we permit it with Henderson County, meet the inspector, and pressure-test every line we run.
