Does a gas fireplace need electricity, and will it still work in a power outage?

A millivolt or standing-pilot gas fireplace needs no electricity and heats through a power failure; electronic-ignition units need an outlet but usually take a battery backup. The blower stops without power; the fire keeps producing heat.
