Do linear gas fireplaces need a hearth, or can they be flush with the floor?
Most linear gas fireplaces don't need a raised hearth — they're sealed direct-vent units with no embers, so they can sit flush at floor level or be mounted partway up the wall like a piece of art. You just follow the model's floor-clearance and finish rules; you're not building a spark-catching extension the way a wood-burner requires.
Sealed combustion frees up the design
A linear unit like Napoleon's Vector 50, the Heat & Glo Cosmo 42, or Majestic's Meridian 42 burns behind sealed glass and vents its exhaust straight outside through a coaxial pipe. Nothing sparks out the front, and the base stays cool. That's what lets these fireplaces skip the traditional raised hearth entirely — the ribbon of flame can start right at floor level, and you can run your finished floor up to the frame within the clearances the manufacturer specifies.
Floor level or floating on the wall
Linear models are happiest when you treat them like a window into fire. Flush at the floor gives you that clean, modern low-and-wide look. Set partway up the wall, they read like a lit painting — a favorite in the mountain-modern homes going up around Asheville and Lake Lure. Either way, the framing has to hit the unit's rough-opening dimensions exactly and hold the correct clearances to combustible finishes above and beside the glass. That's framing-stage work, so it's worth planning before the drywall goes up.
One honest caveat on finishes
The trade for that flush, hearthless look is heat clearance above the opening — linear fireplaces still put out real warmth, and the wall, mantel, or TV above has to sit at the manufacturer's minimum, sometimes with a heat management kit. We'll lay all of that out during a free in-home assessment so the finished wall looks the way you pictured and stays within code.
