Do modern linear gas fireplaces let you put a TV or finishes closer to the unit?
Yes. Many modern linear gas fireplaces use a cool-wall design — the Heat & Glo Cosmo 42 is one — that directs most of its heat forward through the glass rather than up the wall. That lets you mount a TV or run combustible finishes closer than an older radiant unit would ever allow, though you still follow the model's clearance chart.
Cool-wall is a real engineering difference
Cool-wall isn't marketing fluff — it describes how the unit directs its heat. Older radiant fireplaces warm the whole face and send a plume straight up the wall. Modern linear models are built to throw the bulk of their heat out the front through the glass and forward into the room, so the chase directly above stays markedly cooler. That cooler wall is what shrinks the safe distance for a TV, a mantel, or paneling above the fireplace, and it's why the low-and-wide media wall look has taken over.
Closer, not clearance-free
Even a cool-wall linear unit still makes real heat, so closer doesn't mean no rules. Each model publishes a clearance-to-combustibles chart, and finishes above and beside the glass have to respect it. Where you want a TV or mantel tighter still, a heat management kit ducts heat away and buys you more room. The point is that you're starting from a much more forgiving baseline than a traditional firebox, so the finished wall can look clean and modern without a giant dead zone above the fire.
