How far above a gas fireplace should a TV be mounted?
There's no universal number — it's set by the fireplace model's clearance-to-combustibles chart, and it changes with the mantel. As a rule the TV sits above the required combustible clearance for that unit, and a heat management kit or a cool-wall linear model lets you bring it lower. The manual governs; we mount to it, not to a hunch.
Why 'just tell me the inches' doesn't work
Manufacturers publish a clearance-to-combustibles spec for the space above each fireplace, and it varies widely — a sealed cool-wall linear unit might let a screen sit fairly close, while a radiant model demands a tall gap. A mantel changes it again: the deeper a mantel projects, the higher above it a combustible like a TV has to go, because a shelf traps and deflects rising heat. So the honest answer is the model's chart plus your mantel, not a single figure that would be right for one unit and dangerous on another.
The practical field test
On the wall, we're really protecting the TV from sustained heat. A good installer checks the surface temperature where the screen will live after the fireplace has run a while — electronics don't like a steady bath of warm air. If that spot runs warm, the TV goes higher, a mantel goes in to break the heat, or a heat management kit gets added to duct heat away. Any of those buys you a lower, more comfortable viewing height.
Get the height right the first time
Nobody wants to crane their neck at a TV mounted too high, and nobody wants a cooked screen from mounting it too low. The fix is picking the unit and planning the wall together, before framing closes — rough opening, mantel height, TV power and data, and heat management all at once.
