Can I recess a TV into a niche above the fireplace?
Yes, but plan it carefully — a recessed niche can trap heat around the TV, so it has to sit above the fireplace's required clearance and, on most gas units, pair with a cool-wall design or a heat management kit. You'll also want ventilation for the TV and power and data roughed into the niche. It's a framing-stage job, not an afterthought.
The catch with niches: trapped heat
A recessed niche looks clean because the TV sits flush in the wall — but that same pocket can trap warm air around the screen instead of letting it dissipate. Above a fireplace, that turns a manageable amount of heat into a problem if the niche isn't planned right. The niche floor has to clear the fireplace's combustible clearance, and on a unit that sends heat upward you'll want a cool-wall linear model or a heat management kit diverting that heat away before it ever reaches the pocket.
Build the niche to breathe
Even with the fireplace heat handled, a TV makes its own warmth and needs somewhere to shed it. A well-built niche leaves breathing room around the set, and often a discreet vent or two, so air isn't sealed against the electronics. Power, an antenna or cable feed, and HDMI runs all get roughed into the recess while the wall is open — fishing them in later behind stone or tile is a headache nobody enjoys.
