Will heat from the fireplace damage a TV mounted above it?

It can, if the TV sits in the fireplace's rising heat plume — electronics don't tolerate a steady bath of warm air, and over a season or two that shortens a screen's life. The fix is choosing a cool-wall or linear unit that vents heat forward, keeping enough gap, and adding a heat management kit when you want the TV lower.

What actually damages a screen

A TV isn't going to burst into flame above a properly installed fireplace — the real enemy is sustained warmth. Sit a screen in the column of heat that rises off a radiant firebox and its internals run hotter than designed every evening you have a fire going. Do that all winter and you're trading years off the panel. LCD and OLED both dislike it. The damage is slow and quiet, which is exactly why people don't connect the dying TV to the fireplace underneath it.

Designs that keep the wall cool

This is where the unit choice matters more than anything. Cool-wall linear models — the Heat & Glo Cosmo 42 is a good example — are built to throw heat out the front of the glass so the wall above stays cool to the touch. On units that do send heat upward, a manufacturer heat management kit ducts that hot air off the top of the firebox and vents it low or to the side, and a mantel shelves the rest away from the screen. Combine the right unit with the right gap and the TV never sees dangerous heat.

We'd rather steer you right than sell you a problem

If someone shows us a wall where the TV would have to sit in the heat with no way to manage it, we'll say so — that's our honest-advisor stance. Better to pick a cool-wall unit, add heat management, or move the TV than to install something that quietly kills a nice screen. We'll assess your exact wall for free anywhere in WNC.
