Do vented and ventless gas logs look different when burning?
Yes, noticeably. Vented gas logs burn with the damper open and produce a tall, full, dancing yellow flame that wraps the logs like a real wood fire. Ventless logs burn cleaner and hotter, which requires a shorter, more controlled, slightly bluer flame that stays off the logs. Vented looks more real; ventless makes more heat.
Why they look different
It comes down to what each is built to do. Vented logs are decorative-first: the damper stays open, most of the heat goes up the chimney, and the burner is free to throw a tall, lazy, luminous yellow flame that curls through and around the logs — the closest gas gets to a real wood fire. Ventless (vent-free) logs are efficiency-first: they burn nearly all their heat into the room, which demands very complete combustion, so the flame is shorter, crisper, kept off the logs to stay clean, and carries more blue at the base.
The tradeoff that actually matters
This is a looks-versus-heat decision, and we won't pretend otherwise. If ambiance is the goal — that flickering wood-fire picture — vented wins, and it isn't close. If you want real supplemental heat from the set, ventless delivers, but with rules: it adds indoor moisture, has room-size Btu limits, carries an ODS oxygen shutoff, and is restricted or prohibited in some applications, bedrooms and bathrooms in particular. When heat and a natural look both matter, a sealed direct-vent fireplace often beats a log set at both.
