How realistic do today's gas logs actually look?
Surprisingly realistic — the best modern gas logs are hand-painted, cast from real wood, and paired with glowing ember beds and randomized flames that fool most people from across the room. Vented sets look the most like a real wood fire. They're not identical to burning oak up close, but the gap is smaller than it's been in years.
How far the technology has come
Premium gas logs today are cast from actual split hardwood, so the bark, grain, and checking are real wood's, then hand-painted with charring and ash tones. Combine that with a glowing ceramic ember bed and a burner tuned for a tall, lazy, yellow flame and the effect is convincing. Real Fyre's vented sets — cast from real oak and hand-painted — are a good example of the realism the category has reached, and Mendota's hand-cast ceramic-fiber logs are, honestly, the most convincing wood-fire look we sell.
Vented versus ventless, and what's realistic
The single biggest factor in realism is vented versus ventless. Vented gas logs run with the damper open and throw a tall, dancing yellow flame that curls around the logs just like wood — the most realistic gas gets. Ventless logs burn cleaner and hotter for efficiency, which forces a shorter, bluer, more controlled flame that reads a touch less natural. So there's a genuine tradeoff here: vented wins on looks, ventless wins on heat, and we'll walk you through it honestly rather than oversell either.
Seeing is believing
Photos and videos don't do it justice in either direction, which is why we keep sets burning in the Asheville showroom.
