Do vented gas logs normally have a slight smell?
A faint smell from vented gas logs is normal, especially during the first fires of the season or right after installation, from dust burning off and new ceramic logs curing. Because vented logs draft up an open chimney, most odor should go up and out. A strong, persistent, or sooty smell in the room isn't normal and means the flame or damper needs a look.
What "normal" smells like
Vented log sets, like a Real Fyre Charred American Oak set, run with the damper open, so their combustion byproducts head up the chimney the way they're designed to. A slight odor at startup, from settled dust, new logs curing, or just the warm scent of that tall, decorative yellow flame, is expected and fades quickly. Remember these are ambiance-first appliances: the big, lazy yellow flame that makes them look so much like real wood is exactly what sends most of the heat, and the smell, up the flue.
When the smell signals a problem
The odor turns into a message when it lingers or strengthens in the room. A strong, staying smell, soot on the logs or the surround, or a smoky odor usually means the damper isn't fully open, the flue isn't drafting because of a cold plug, a downdraft, or a blockage, or the burner needs cleaning. Vented logs must have that chimney open and drawing every time you burn. If smoke or fumes are spilling back into the room instead of going up, stop and get it checked.
Rotten egg is never "slight"
Draw a hard line at rotten egg or sulfur. That's the odorant in the gas warning you of a possible leak, and it means leave and call from outside, not tolerate it. The first-fire dust smell after a long summer is normal, but a full annual service clears it and confirms the damper and draft are working before you rely on the unit.
