Do water-vapor electric fireplaces need distilled water to keep mineral dust out of the air?
Yes — most manufacturers call for distilled or demineralized water, and it's worth following. A water-vapor fireplace atomizes water ultrasonically, and any minerals in tap water get flung into the room as fine white mineral dust that settles on furniture and can be inhaled. Distilled water has no minerals, so no dust — and it keeps scale off the misting element.
Where the white dust comes from
An ultrasonic mister doesn't boil water — it shatters it into a micro-fine fog mechanically. Whatever is dissolved in that water gets carried along, so hard tap water (and WNC well water can be plenty mineral-rich) sends calcium and magnesium into the air as a dry white powder once the mist evaporates. You'll notice it as a faint film on the TV, the mantel, and nearby shelves. It's the exact white-dust complaint people have with cheap ultrasonic humidifiers, for the exact same reason.
What distilled water changes
Distilled or demineralized water has been stripped of those minerals, so there's nothing left to atomize into dust — the air stays clean and the surfaces stay clear. It also protects the appliance: minerals that don't leave in the mist bake onto the vibrating element as scale, which dulls the flame effect and shortens the disc's life. So distilled water is doing two jobs at once, cleaner air and a longer-lasting unit. Keep a jug nearby and top off with it rather than tap.
Keep it in perspective
This is a maintenance quirk, not a health hazard on the order of combustion. A water-vapor electric fireplace has no flame, no flue, and no combustion byproducts — no carbon monoxide, no nitrogen dioxide, no soot — so the mineral-dust question is really the only air point worth managing, and distilled water settles it. Empty the reservoir when you're away so it doesn't grow anything, and wipe the element on the schedule in your manual.
