Do water-vapor flame electric fireplaces add humidity to the room?
A little, yes — water-vapor (or mist) electric fireplaces create their flame effect by pushing a fine ultrasonic mist of water through light, so they do release a small amount of humidity as they run. It's a modest, room-level amount, not a heat-and-moisture load like a ventless gas unit. Standard LED electric fireplaces, by contrast, add no moisture at all.
How a water-vapor flame works
These units — sometimes called mist or steam electric fireplaces — fake a remarkably convincing flame by lighting up a curtain of ultra-fine water droplets thrown off by an ultrasonic mister. There's no combustion; the flame is literally illuminated fog. To make that fog, the unit slowly draws water from a small reservoir, and a portion of it drifts into the room as humidity. So unlike a standard LED electric fireplace, which is completely moisture-neutral, a water-vapor model does put a bit of dampness into the air.
How much are we talking about
Not much. A water-vapor flame sips from its tank over hours, and the humidity it adds is on the order of a small tabletop humidifier, not a fog machine. In dry WNC winter air, that trickle is more likely to feel pleasant than to cause trouble. It's nowhere near the moisture output of a ventless gas log set, which burns fuel and dumps real combustion water vapor into the room. You're very unlikely to see foggy windows or damp walls from a water-vapor electric unit alone.
Two things worth knowing
Because these run on a water reservoir, water quality matters — many manufacturers call for distilled or filtered water so minerals don't build up in the mister or drift out as fine dust. And keep in mind the moisture is a side effect of the flame, not a heating feature; like all electric fireplaces, the heat is a separate element, capped around 5,000 BTU of supplemental warmth, and it's dead in a power outage.
