Brevard is propane territory — downtown homes and the cabins out toward Connestee Falls and Pisgah Forest mostly run on tanks rather than a gas main. Whichever fuel you have, a gas fire pit or outdoor fireplace is the feature that stays lightable when wood fires are banned, because it produces no embers to carry into the woods and cuts off at a valve.

That distinction matters more here than almost anywhere, given how much of the county is public forest a stray spark could reach.

Wet most of the year, dangerous in the dry gaps

Brevard catches 80-plus inches of rain a year, so a burn ban can feel counterintuitive. But wildfire risk isn't about the annual total — it's about the dry, breezy windows in late fall after leaf drop and in early spring before green-up, when cured brush ignites easily. Those are exactly when the Forest Service and Transylvania County post bans, and open recreational fires fall under them.

Some bans stop all open burning; others leave room for small, contained, attended fires. Before you light wood, confirm the current declaration with the Transylvania County fire marshal.
