Recovery left a great deal of dead wood on the ground around Canton and Bethel — snapped limbs, uprooted trees, brush piled where the water dropped it. As that timber dries out, it becomes exactly the tinder a fall dry spell turns dangerous, and even a tidy outdoor fireplace on a cleared lot is still an open flame in that setting.

That's part of why the Forest Service and Haywood County don't hesitate to declare bans when conditions turn, and why open recreational fires fall under them.

Who's actually calling the ban

A ban can come from the Forest Service for lands it protects, Haywood County for unincorporated areas, or the Town of Canton within its limits, and the Forest Service order also reaches within 100 feet of woodlands. Any of them can be in force on a given week, so a call to the Haywood County fire marshal before you light is the honest way to know.

Heat and fire that don't fight the grid

Many Canton homes came through the last long outage warm only because they had a working hearth — and the same logic applies outside. A propane or natural-gas fire pit throws no embers and shuts off at a valve, so it's generally usable when wood fires are banned.
