Does a fireplace insert need a chimney liner to be safe in an old chimney?
Yes — a lot of Arden's 1980s-90s homes in Royal Pines and Skyland have tired open masonry fireplaces that pull heat out of the room, and turning one into a real heater with an insert requires a full-length stainless liner sized to it. Without the liner, the insert vents into an oversized cold flue that stalls its draft — you'd trade a drafty firebox for an unsafe one.
From net heat loss to 70-percent-plus
An open masonry fireplace can actually run a net heat loss on a cold night — it sends more warm room air up the chimney than it returns as heat. A sealed insert commonly runs 70 percent efficient or better, which is why dropping one into these Skyland and Royal Pines fireboxes is such a satisfying upgrade. But that efficiency depends on the liner: the sealed insert makes a smaller, cooler exhaust than the open fire did, and only a right-sized stainless liner keeps it drafting cleanly instead of condensing in the old oversized flue.
Why the flue can't stay as-is
The clay flue over a 1980s open firebox was sized for a roaring wood fire, so it's far too wide for an insert. Dump the insert's modest exhaust up it and the gases cool, slow, and leave creosote high in the chimney — plus draft weak enough that smoke can roll back into the room. Relining to the top with a proper cap fixes the draft and gives a future sweep a clean shot at the whole system.
Gas mains, quick trip, permitted
