Does a fireplace insert need a chimney liner to be safe in an old chimney?
Yes — in Brevard, where 80-plus inches of rain a year quietly wrecks old chimneys, a full-length stainless liner sized to the insert is non-negotiable for safety. Cracked crowns, spalled brick, and rusted-through dampers let water into the flue for years before you notice, leaving the masonry liner too deteriorated to safely carry an insert's exhaust.
Transylvania's wet season is hard on flues
Brevard's wet stretch from March into June drives water through every gap in a chimney's armor — a cracked crown, a failed cap, a chase that wicks moisture into the masonry. Freeze it overnight and thaw it by afternoon, over and over, and clay flue tiles crack and mortar joints open. That's the flue a new insert would otherwise be venting into.
