Does a propane fireplace need different or more frequent maintenance than a natural gas one?
Maggie Valley is propane, full stop — at 3,020 feet there is no gas main, just LP tanks feeding the cabins and vacation rentals. Those units sit idle for weeks, then have to light instantly for the next guest, and that intermittent duty, on top of propane's fussier burner, is exactly why the once-a-year service is non-negotiable here. Haywood County, 40 minutes west of our showroom.
Idle, then instant — the rental problem
A vacation-rental fireplace in Maggie Valley might go unused for weeks, and that is when the trouble builds: spiders and dust settle into the pilot assembly and burner ports over the idle stretch, so the unit that has to fire on demand for arriving guests is the one most likely to sputter. This is one of the coldest communities we serve, at over 3,000 feet, and a dead hearth on a cold rental night is a guest complaint you do not want. Get the inspection done pre-season, before the peak rental months, so every cabin lights on the first try.
All propane, so tuning is everything
With no natural gas anywhere up here, every fireplace is on LP, and that makes the burner setup the whole ballgame. Propane runs at a higher pressure through smaller orifices than natural gas, so an orifice meant for the wrong fuel or a regulator off spec sends the flame rich and sooty. On these high, cold cabins the setup has to be dialed. Everything downstream of the tank is ours; the tank is coordinated with your propane supplier. Forty minutes out, preventive service is far cheaper than an emergency run. Call (828) 545-0525.
