Does a propane fireplace need different or more frequent maintenance than a natural gas one?
Swannanoa is rebuilding, and many of those rebuilt and renovated homes are getting new fireplaces and stoves — which means a wave of first annual services coming due. Natural gas or propane, the schedule is the same single visit a year. The town runs mostly on the Buncombe gas main; propane units get the closer burner look. Fifteen minutes east of Emma Road.
New installs, first services due
Storm recovery has driven a surge of new fireplace and stove installations in Swannanoa's rebuilt homes, and every one of those units has a first annual service coming within the year — new does not mean maintenance-free. The Grovemont area's 1940s-to-60s homes with original masonry are getting worked on too. And Swannanoa's river-valley fog, cold-air pooling, and damp air are hard on masonry chimneys, so the yearly professional visit is where corrosion and draft issues get caught before they matter. Book it at the end of summer, before the cold arrives.
When it is propane
Most of Swannanoa is on the natural-gas main, but there are pockets of propane, and on those the tuning differs — higher pressure, smaller orifices, a regulator that has to be right. A mismatched orifice or a rough natural-gas-to-propane conversion soots the logs and glass, and that is what we look for on LP calls. New lines are permitted with Buncombe County and inspected. If a flame goes sooty and sluggish between visits, do not wait it out — call (828) 545-0525.
