Does an infrared electric fireplace heat a larger area than a fan-forced one?
Not really — both top out around the same modest supplemental output, roughly 5,000 BTU and up to about 400 square feet. The difference is how the heat feels, not how far it reaches. Fan-forced units blow warm air to heat the room's air; infrared (quartz) units radiate heat that warms people and objects directly. Neither one is a whole-house or outage heater.
Same ceiling, different sensation
An electric fireplace, infrared or fan-forced, is a supplemental heater plugged into a standard outlet, and that outlet caps what it can do — around 1,500 watts, roughly 5,000 BTU, enough to take the chill off a space up to about 400 square feet. Infrared doesn't break that ceiling. What changes is the delivery.
Fan-forced units (the type in most electric fireplaces, including the Dimplex we carry) use a heating element and a blower to warm the air, so the whole room's air temperature comes up. Infrared uses quartz elements that send out radiant heat, which warms your body and the furniture directly, like standing in a patch of sun — you feel it fast even if the air is still cool.
Which feel suits which room
Fan-forced heat is better for evenly warming an enclosed room you sit in for a while — a bedroom, a small den — because it raises the air temperature and holds it. Infrared shines where you want to feel warmth quickly or in a spot that's hard to keep sealed, since it heats people rather than fighting to warm all the air.
In a drafty older room, infrared can feel more effective even though the BTU number is the same. Some units even combine both. But feeling warmer sooner isn't the same as heating more square footage — the coverage rating is set by the wattage, not the technology.
What electric can't do — and we'll tell you straight
Whichever you pick, be clear on the limits: an electric fireplace is a supplemental heater and a beautiful flame effect — Dimplex makes the most convincing electric flame we sell — but it won't heat a whole house, and it's dead in a power outage since it runs entirely on electricity.
