Does an outdoor gas fireplace need venting?
It depends on the type. A true outdoor gas fireplace built like an indoor sealed unit — a direct-vent or B-vent firebox rated for exterior use — still needs its vent to run to open air. But most outdoor fireplaces and fire pits are open to the sky already, so the "chimney" is really about draft and appearance, not sealing combustion byproducts indoors.
Outdoors, the air handles most of the venting for you
The whole point of venting an indoor gas appliance is to carry combustion byproducts — including carbon monoxide — safely out of your living space. Outside, you're already in open air, so an open-front masonry or manufactured outdoor fireplace vents naturally up its chimney, and a fire pit vents straight to the sky. That's why fire pits and open outdoor fireplaces don't carry the sealed-venting requirements an indoor unit does. Draft still matters, though — a proper chimney or flue on an open outdoor fireplace pulls smoke and heat up and away from the people sitting in front of it instead of letting it roll back into the seating area.
When an outdoor gas fireplace does need real venting
Some outdoor rooms — screened porches, covered patios, three-season spaces — are enclosed enough that they aren't truly "outside." Put a fireplace under a solid roof or inside walls and you're back to needing a listed, properly vented appliance, because now combustion products can collect. The rule of thumb: the more roof and walls around it, the more it needs to be treated like an indoor install.
