What is a fire pit burner ring or burner pan?
The burner ring or pan is the metal component that delivers gas and creates the flame in a gas fire pit. A ring is a circular or square tube drilled with ports so flame rises evenly around it; a pan is a flat tray the burner sits in, holding fire glass or lava rock. It's the engine of the whole feature.
Ring or pan — same job, different shape
A burner ring is exactly what it sounds like: a hollow stainless tube bent into a circle, square, or rectangle, with gas ports drilled along the top. Gas fills the tube, escapes through the ports, and you get an even ring of flame. A burner pan takes a straight linear burner and drops it into a shallow metal tray; you fill the tray around the burner with fire glass or lava rock, and the flame comes up through the media. Rings suit round bowls and drop-in kits; pans suit linear tables and rectangular built-ins.
Why the metal grade matters up here
The single thing that separates a burner that lasts from one that rusts through in three seasons is the material. Cheap fire pit burners are mild steel or aluminum; a good one is 304 or 316 stainless steel.
