What's the difference between match-lit, push-button, and electronic ignition fire pits?
They're three ways to light a gas fire pit. Match-lit means you open a key valve and touch a flame to the burner by hand — simplest and cheapest. Push-button, or piezo, adds a spark igniter you click, so no open flame is needed. Electronic ignition uses a battery or power for automatic, remote- or switch-controlled lighting, often with a safety flame sensor.
Match-lit: the simplest, most durable option
Match-lit is exactly what the name says — you turn a key valve to release gas, then light the burner with a long lighter or fireplace match. There's no ignition module, no battery, nothing electronic to fail, which is why it's the most reliable and lowest-maintenance setup we install. The one thing to respect is the moment of lighting: you're bringing a flame to a burner that's already flowing gas, so you light promptly and keep the gas off until you're ready. For a lot of folks with a simple built-in pit, that's a fair trade for bulletproof simplicity.
Push-button (piezo): a spark at your fingertip
A push-button, or piezo, igniter adds a small spring-loaded striker that throws a spark at the burner when you click it — the same mechanism in a gas grill. You still open the gas manually, but you no longer need an open flame in your hand. It's a nice convenience upgrade with almost no added complexity and nothing to plug in. The one honest caveat: piezo igniters are the part most likely to wear out over years of use, though they're inexpensive to service.
Electronic ignition: automatic, and worth it when
Electronic ignition is the full-convenience option — a battery pack or line power runs a control module that opens the gas and sparks the burner from a button, wall switch, or remote, often with a flame-sensing safety that shuts the gas off if the fire ever goes out. It's the right call for larger fire features, for outdoor rooms where you want one-touch operation, and for anyone who wants that automatic cutoff.
