Many Backgrounds. One Standard.

A key valve is the manual shutoff that controls gas to a fire pit. You insert a removable key into a socket — usually set into the pit wall or a nearby patio surface — and turn it to open the gas, then light the pit. It's the simplest fire pit control: no electronics, no batteries, just a valve you turn by hand.

How a key valve setup works

The valve body plumbs inline on the gas supply, and its stem ends in a splined socket you reach with a loose key — a short metal handle you keep nearby. Turn the key a quarter to half turn and gas flows to the burner; you light it with a long match, a lighter, or a built-in igniter. Turn the key back and the flame goes out. Because the key is removable, it doubles as a child-safety measure — no key in the socket, no way for a kid to turn the gas on.

Where we place the key valve

Placement is a real decision, not an afterthought. Code and common sense say the shutoff should be reachable without leaning over the flames, so we typically set the key socket in the side of a built-in pit, in the patio deck a few feet away, or in a nearby wall. On a propane setup out in Candler or Brevard, that valve is one link in a chain that starts at the tank; on a natural-gas patio in south Asheville, it ties back to the home's gas piping. Either way, we run and pressure-test that line under permit.

Key valve vs. push-button — which fits you

A key valve is about as basic as outdoor gas gets — grid-independent, nothing to power, nothing to fail — which is why plenty of homeowners love it for a simple built-in pit. The trade-off is there's no automatic ignition and no flame-height dial; it's open, light, enjoy, close. If you want a push-button spark or a flame you can turn down, that's a different valve-and-ignition package we can spec instead. We'll walk you through both at the Asheville showroom.
