Does high elevation affect how a gas fire pit burns?
Yes. At elevation the thinner air carries less oxygen, so a burner tuned for sea level can run rich — a lazy yellow flame, some soot, sometimes a lower fire than you'd expect. It rarely matters much at Asheville's roughly 2,200 feet, but up in the higher cabins it's real, which is why the orifice and gas pressure get set for your actual site.
The physics of a thinner sky
Combustion needs oxygen, and there's simply less of it per breath the higher you go. A burner metered for dense sea-level air delivers a touch too much fuel for the oxygen available up here, and the flame tells on it — it goes soft and yellow, tips can carbon up, and heat output slips.
Outdoor fire pits are far more forgiving of this than a sealed indoor unit, because they draw all the open air they want. But a burner that's dialed in still looks and performs better than one that was set on a bench and never touched again.
Where it matters in WNC — and where it doesn't
Down on the valley floors around Asheville, Hendersonville, Fletcher, and Arden, elevation is rarely the deciding factor. Push up toward the higher ridges and the cabins around Cashiers and Lake Toxaway, and the thinner air starts to earn attention in how a burner is set.
It stacks with fuel choice, too. Propane already burns hotter per unit and needs a different orifice and pressure than natural gas — get the fuel jetting wrong at altitude and you'll chase a sooty, weak flame you never quite fix.
