Does living at high mountain elevation change whether gas or wood is the better fireplace choice?

Elevation doesn't pick the fuel for you — gas and wood both work fine at 3,000 or 4,000 feet — but it changes how each one has to be set up. Draft gets harder as you climb, ridge-line downdrafts punish natural-draft wood chimneys, and most high-elevation homes here run on propane, which needs its own orifices and pressures. Setup matters more than fuel.

Thin air, tall trees, stubborn flues

Draft is harder at elevation, and WNC piles on: ridges, valleys, and tall trees throw downdrafts at chimneys all winter, and on a cold start the flue is full of cold air that sits in the chimney like a plug. That physics lands hardest on wood — open fireplaces and natural-draft flues live or die by draft. None of it is a reason to give up on wood; it's a reason to have the chimney height, termination, and cap chosen by people who install at elevation every week.

Direct-vent gas mostly opts out of the argument. It's sealed combustion through a coaxial pipe — it doesn't depend on a tall warm chimney pulling hard, which is why it behaves so predictably on a windy ridge above Black Mountain or Maggie Valley.

Up here, "gas" usually means propane

The natural-gas mains run along the Asheville and Hendersonville corridors — Fletcher, Arden, south Asheville. Climb toward Fairview, Candler, Brevard, and the cabins, and you're in propane country. Propane burns hotter per unit and needs different orifices and pressures; a unit set up wrong will soot. That's the real elevation question — not whether gas works up high, but whether it's set up for the fuel you actually have.

The higher and more remote the home, the longer you wait for lines to be repaired after a storm — Helene made that plain, and the homes that stayed warm through those multi-day outages were the ones with a working wood or gas hearth.
