Does living at high mountain elevation change whether gas or wood is the better fireplace choice?
Candler's fuel picture is the thing to sort out first, not the elevation. Newer Enka-Candler subdivisions can reach natural gas, but climb into Hominy Valley, Sand Hill, and up Pisgah Highway and you're in propane country like much of this side of the county. Both gas and wood heat fine at 2,200 feet; matching the unit to your actual fuel is what matters.
Gas main or propane? It depends where you are
The fast-growing subdivisions closer to Enka-Candler may tie into natural gas, while the rural homes up the valleys run on propane — and the two aren't interchangeable. Propane burns hotter per unit and needs different orifices and manifold pressures, so a unit set for natural gas will soot on propane and vice versa. A quick check tells us which you have before we spec anything. We confirm your fuel, set the appliance for it, and pressure-test the line; on a propane home a Kozy Heat Springfield 36 is a dependable choice.
A valley bowl that likes clean burns
Hominy Valley sits in a natural bowl, and on still, cold mornings that traps air — which is a real argument for clean-burning sealed appliances over a smoky open fire. A direct-vent gas unit or a modern EPA-certified wood insert burns far cleaner than an old open masonry firebox, better for the air in the hollow and for the room. Many newer Candler homes came with a basic decorative firebox; owners here tend to want a real heat-producing upgrade within a few years.
