Gas insert vs pellet insert — which is better for my fireplace?
In Asheville, on the natural-gas mains that run through most of the city, the gas insert is the easier, more livable choice for nearly every home we retrofit — flip-switch heat, one annual service, and nothing to feed or empty. A pellet insert only pulls ahead if you specifically want bag-bought fuel and don't mind that it goes dark the moment the power does.
What your Asheville firebox is starting from
Montford and North Asheville are full of original masonry fireboxes — beautiful, oversized, and, left open, a net loser on heat. Drop a sealed insert into one and you go from a chimney that pulls warm room air outside to an appliance running 70% efficient or better. South Asheville's newer construction is a different starting point: clean-face gas and modern boxes that a gas insert slots into with minimal fuss. Either way the retrofit hangs on a correctly sized liner up the existing flue.
A pellet insert seals the same firebox, but it brings a hopper, an auger, and an exhaust blower into a room that, in a lot of these homes, was built for a quiet hearth.
Why gas usually wins in town — and when it doesn't
On the city mains, connecting a gas insert is straightforward licensed work: we run or extend the line, permit it with Buncombe County, pressure-test it, and meet the inspector. That's the part a showroom or a mason legally can't do in North Carolina — running fuel is a licensed trade, and it's ours. A gas insert like the Napoleon Oakville X4 or Kozy Heat Chaska 25L then just works: annual service and done.
Pellet earns a look if you like buying fuel by the bag and running the numbers on BTUs — but it can't burn without power, and Asheville lost electricity for days after Helene.
