Gas insert vs pellet insert — which is better for my fireplace?

For Black Mountain homes, the gas insert is the more practical daily heater — and the cold-pocket mornings here are a big reason why. When the Swannanoa Valley inversion drops your morning 10 to 15 degrees below Asheville, you want instant flip-switch heat, not a pellet unit cold-starting and ramping up. Pellet heats well once it's going, but it needs power and a little patience.

The valley makes a case for instant heat

Black Mountain and Montreat sit where cold air pools — those temperature inversions can leave you 10 to 15 degrees colder than Asheville first thing, with frost dates hanging later into spring than you'd expect. A gas insert answers that on demand: switch on, full flame, warm room. A pellet insert has to light its burn pot and build up, which is a small thing on a mild evening and a real thing on a bitter valley morning when you want heat now. The heavily wooded lots up around Montreat also keep houses shaded, cool, and damp — its own argument for sealed, efficient heat over an open firebox.

Both need the liner; only one needs the grid

Whichever way you go, the insert drops into your existing masonry box with a correctly sized liner — that's the non-negotiable. The real fork is power. Natural gas runs through Black Mountain, so a gas insert is straightforward to connect, and with millivolt or battery-backup ignition it keeps heating when the lines go down — which, tucked against the mountains here, they do. A pellet insert stops the second it loses electricity. Running and permitting that gas line with Buncombe County is licensed work; we do it, pressure-test it, and meet the inspector.
