Gas insert vs pellet insert — which is better for my fireplace?

That makes it the low-fuss choice for effortless, power-optional heat. A pellet insert can pencil out on fuel cost, but it depends on electricity and adds a machine to maintain in a famously wet climate.
Propane country changes the setup, not the answer
Brevard sits in propane territory — the cabins around Connestee Falls and Sherwood Forest, most of the older downtown stock, run on LP, not a natural-gas main. That's not a strike against a gas insert; it just means the appliance has to be configured for propane, which burns hotter per unit and needs different orifices and pressures than natural gas. Get that wrong and it soots; get it right and it's seamless. Matching fuel to appliance, connecting the tank, and pressure-testing the line is licensed gas work — the exact thing a mason or a showroom in North Carolina can't legally finish for you.
Transylvania's rain is the other factor
This is one of the wettest corners of the region — 80-plus inches a year that cracks crowns, spalls brick, and rusts out dampers, and it's rough on the crawl spaces and chimney chases these fireboxes sit in. Any insert needs a sound, correctly sized liner going in, and in Brevard we look hard at moisture damage before we seal anything up. A pellet insert adds its own concern here: an auger, control board, and blowers are electronics living in that damp chase. A gas insert has far less to corrode.
So which one
