Read reviews for the right things
A 5-star average is nice, but the useful signal is in the details. Look for reviews that mention gas work done cleanly, permits pulled, crews that protected floors and cleaned up, and — most telling — how the company responded when something needed a second visit. Any busy installer has the occasional hiccup; the good ones fix it without drama.

References worth actually calling
Ask for two or three recent local references and pick up the phone. Good questions: Did the crew show up when they said? Was the final price what was quoted? Did the permit and inspection happen? Would you use them again? A confident company hands over references without hesitation.
If an installer gets cagey about references or only offers jobs from years ago, that's a quiet flag.
Verify the things reviews can't tell you
