What questions should I ask a fireplace installer before hiring them?
Ask five things: Are you a licensed gas contractor in North Carolina? Do you pull the permit and meet the inspector? Are you insured, with liability and workers' comp? Who actually runs the gas line — your crew or a sub? And what's your workmanship guarantee on top of the manufacturer's warranty? Clear answers to all five separate the pros from the risks.
The license question comes first
In North Carolina, running or extending a gas line is licensed work. A showroom, a mason, or a handyman can sell or set a fireplace, but they legally can't connect it to fuel. So the first question is blunt: are you a licensed gas contractor? If they hedge, you have your answer.
Follow it with the permit question. We pull the permit with your county — Buncombe, Henderson, Haywood, or Transylvania — and meet the inspector. A company that says you don't need a permit is telling you they plan to do gas work off the books, which can void your homeowner's insurance and complicate a future home sale.
Insurance and who does the work
Ask for proof of general liability and workers' compensation. Liability protects your home if something goes wrong; workers' comp means an injured crew member is the company's problem, not yours. An uninsured lowball quote can get very expensive if someone gets hurt on your property.
