Brevard, North Carolina

What questions should I ask a fireplace installer before hiring them?

In Brevard, ask which fuel your property runs on first: the mains reach parts of town, but many cabins are on propane, and setup differs. Then ask whether the installer is a licensed North Carolina gas contractor, pulls the Transylvania County permit, carries liability and workers' comp, runs its own gas line, and guarantees the labor. With 80-plus inches of rain a year, also ask how they'll protect the chimney from moisture.

Fuel first in Transylvania County

Brevard is split. Downtown homes may tap natural gas while cabins toward Connestee Falls and Sherwood Forest almost always run propane. Ask the installer which fuel your address is on and whether they configure the burner for it correctly; propane burns hotter per unit and needs different orifices and pressures, and a wrong-fuel setup soots the glass. If it's propane, ask how they coordinate the tank and regulator with your supplier.

Ask about rain, crowns, and dampers

Brevard gets more than 80 inches of rain a year, and that water cracks chimney crowns, spalls brick, and rusts dampers, especially on crawl-space chimney chases. If you're converting an existing fireplace, ask whether the installer inspects the crown, cap, and flue for moisture damage before quoting, and whether a stainless cap and sealed insert make sense. Skipping that step invites a callback the first wet spring.

License, permit, and the drive

The core question stands: are you a licensed gas contractor? A mason or showroom can set a firebox but can't legally connect it to fuel in North Carolina. Confirm the Transylvania County permit, liability and workers' comp, and a workmanship guarantee on top of the manufacturer's warranty. Our Asheville showroom is a 40-minute drive from Brevard.
