Do fireplace stores install what they sell, or do I have to find my own installer?
It depends on the store. A specialty showroom like Steady Flame both sells and installs — one licensed company handling the appliance, venting, gas line, permit, and inspection. A big-box store sells you the box and leaves you to find someone licensed to connect it to fuel, which in North Carolina is the hard part.
One company, or a scavenger hunt?
The cleanest projects we see are the ones where a single accountable company owns the whole job — the fireplace, the venting, the gas line, the permit, the inspection, and the workmanship guarantee behind all of it. The appliance is maybe a third of the job. The vent path, the gas supply, the clearances, and code compliance are where a fireplace quietly succeeds or fails — and where an unpermitted install can come back to bite a home sale or an insurance claim.

Before you put money down at any store, ask one question: do you install what you sell, with your own licensed crew, and pull the permit? If the answer is no, you don't have a fireplace — you have a shopping problem.
