Two towns share one valley

Black Mountain and Montreat are separately incorporated, and each can post an open-burning restriction on top of Buncombe County and the state. Downtown Black Mountain, Ridgecrest, and the Swannanoa Valley stretch fall under the town of Black Mountain; a heavily wooded Montreat lot answers to Montreat's own authority.

Those shaded, moisture-prone Montreat lots dry slower than open ground, but during a countywide ban the rule is the same — know which town line you're behind before you light anything.

Cold valley, frequent fires

The Swannanoa Valley runs cold — morning temperature inversions here can sit 10 to 15 degrees below Asheville, and frost lingers later into spring — so folks light fires often. A burn ban never reaches that indoor fire or a contained gas fire pit; it's strictly about open outdoor burning.
