How do I find out if a burn ban is in effect in my WNC county right now?

Small town, county backbone

Clyde is a small incorporated town in Haywood County, so the town can add an open-burning restriction on top of the county and the state. But much of the surrounding area — out toward Fines Creek, Crabtree, and the lower Pigeon valley — is unincorporated Haywood, where the county fire marshal and the Forest Service county list are your two sources.

One check of which side of the town line you're on tells you whose rule applies before you burn.

River humidity, tired fireboxes

Clyde shares the cold-air drainage and river humidity of Canton and Waynesville, and that damp air rusts dampers and degrades masonry chimneys faster than folks expect. Its housing leans toward 1960s-80s ranch-style homes with dated fireplaces — good candidates for a sealed insert.

A burn ban won't stop your indoor fire, but a rusted-out damper or a tired open box will underperform when you need it. Have it looked at before heating season.
