Hendersonville, North Carolina

How do I find out if a burn ban is in effect in my WNC county right now?

For Hendersonville, pull up Henderson County on the North Carolina Forest Service burn-ban list first — that's the quickest read on a statewide open-burning ban. Then call the Hendersonville Fire Department or the Henderson County fire marshal, because the city can add its own restriction a state list won't show. Downtown and Spartanburg Highway addresses can answer to different authorities.

City limits versus the county

Hendersonville is incorporated, so its fire department can declare an open-burning restriction tighter than Henderson County's or the state's. A Main Street home sits squarely inside those city limits. A newer place off Spartanburg Highway, or out toward Mountain Home and Etowah, may be unincorporated Henderson County, answering only to the county fire marshal and the state's county list.

Knowing which side of the line your driveway is on tells you exactly whose rules apply before you burn anything outdoors — and saves you a second phone call to the wrong office.

Low-maintenance heat for a retirement town

A lot of our Hendersonville neighbors moved here for a quieter, lower-fuss home, and a burn ban is precisely the sort of thing they'd rather not track every dry autumn. The ban covers open wood burning — a brush pile, a wood fire pit — not a contained gas fire pit or your indoor gas fireplace.

On the natural-gas mains that run through much of town, we install and pressure-test a sealed gas fire feature that stays usable clean through a ban. It's a 25-minute run from our Asheville showroom. Call (828) 545-0525.

Check the chimney before the cold, too

Hendersonville's clay-heavy soil settles foundations and stresses older masonry chimneys, so if you lean on a wood fireplace during ban season, have the flue inspected in late summer. A burn ban won't stop your indoor fire, but a cracked liner or blocked flue will — and that's the failure we'd rather catch in September than during December's first cold snap.
