Sylva sits in Jackson County, and open-burning authority splits three ways here. Inside the town of Sylva, the town fire department can post its own restriction. Out toward Cullowhee near Western Carolina, or in historic Dillsboro, you may be in unincorporated Jackson County under the county fire marshal and the state list.

Student rentals turn over constantly and often burn scrap outdoors, so knowing the current ban status before you light anything is worth the two-minute check.
