Haywood sets its own line

Waynesville is an incorporated town with its own fire department, so it can stack a restriction on top of Haywood County and the state. A Frog Level or downtown Main Street address sits inside the town limits. A Hazelwood home or a place out toward Lake Junaluska may be unincorporated Haywood, where the county fire marshal and the state's county list are your two sources.

This town runs on its hearths

Waynesville leans on fire more than most — the older Hazelwood housing stock is full of drafty open fireplaces, and the heating season here runs about three weeks longer than Asheville's.
