How do I set the thermostat and timer on my electric fireplace?
On most electric fireplaces — including the Dimplex IgniteXL Bold we carry — the thermostat and timer live on the hand-held remote or the unit's control panel. Set your target temperature with the thermostat buttons and the heater cycles on and off to hold it. The sleep timer counts down in set increments, then shuts the heater off.
Thermostat: set a number, let it hold
An electric fireplace's thermostat works like any other — pick a target temperature and the built-in heating element cycles on until the room reaches it, then idles. On a Dimplex, you press the thermostat button and use the arrows to set your number in the display. Keep expectations honest: an electric unit is a supplemental heater, roughly 5,000 BTU and good for a room up to about 400 square feet. Ask it to hold 72 in a big, drafty great room and it'll run constantly and still fall short. In a bedroom or office, it holds a set temperature beautifully.
The timer and the flame-only trick
Most electric models include a sleep timer — commonly settable from 30 minutes up to several hours — that shuts the heater down after it expires. That's handy overnight, so you're not heating an empty room until morning. Worth knowing: the flame effect and the heat are separate. You can run the timer on the heat while leaving the flame glowing, or shut the heater off entirely and keep the flame on — Dimplex calls it flame-only summer mode, and it's why an electric unit earns its keep year-round.
Where the controls are, and one honest caveat
Between the remote and the panel behind or beneath the firebox, you've got the same functions in two places, so a lost remote never locks you out. The one thing an electric fireplace can't do is help you in a power outage — no electricity, no flame and no heat.
