How do I turn on my electric fireplace and what do all the buttons do?
Most electric fireplaces turn on with a main power switch on the unit, then a remote or control panel handles the rest — flame on and off, flame color and brightness, the heater with a temperature setting, and often a timer. The flame runs independent of the heat, so you can enjoy the glow without any warmth year-round.
Power, Then Everything Else
Almost every electric fireplace has a main power switch — a rocker or button on the unit itself, often behind a lower panel or on the side. Flip that first; it's the master. From there a remote or a small control panel runs the show. On the Dimplex units we carry, like the IgniteXL Bold, the flame, color, brightness, heater, and thermostat all live on the remote once the main switch is on. If nothing responds to the remote, check that master switch before anything else.
Reading the Remote
The buttons break into a few groups. A flame or power button turns the visual fire on and off. A separate heat button runs the heating element — this is the one that actually warms the room, up to around 5,000 BTU. Up and down arrows set a target temperature or adjust flame height and brightness. A flame-color or effects button cycles through ember and flame tones. Many add a timer and a dimmer. The heat and the flame are controlled independently — that's the key thing to understand.
Flame Without Heat
Because the flame effect is just LED light, you can run it with the heater completely off. That's the summer mode — you get the glow and movement with no warmth, which people love on a cool mountain evening that isn't cold enough for real heat. One honest caveat we always give: an electric fireplace makes no heat in a power outage. After Helene, that mattered. If backup heat is the goal, a gas or wood unit is the right tool; if it's ambiance and easy supplemental warmth, electric is hard to beat.
