How do you figure out how much gas a fireplace uses from its BTU rating?
Divide the fireplace's BTU input rating by the fuel's energy content: natural gas holds about 1,000 BTU per cubic foot, propane about 91,500 BTU per gallon. So a 30,000-BTU natural-gas fireplace burns roughly 30 cubic feet per hour at full flame; the same input on propane is about a third of a gallon per hour.
The simple arithmetic
Take the input rating and divide by how much energy the fuel carries. Our Napoleon Ascent 36 is rated 26,500 BTU on natural gas, so at full flame it draws roughly 26 to 27 cubic feet per hour — a bit over a quarter therm. A Kozy Heat Springfield 36 at 30,000 BTU on propane burns about a third of a gallon an hour wide open. Treat these as ceilings, not averages: you rarely run a fireplace flat-out, so real-world use is usually lower.
It's the input rating that burns fuel — and turndown cuts it
Fuel consumption tracks the input rating, not the output rating, so that's the number to use. And most quality units don't sit at full flame — flame modulation lets them turn down. The Valor H5 modulates from 24,000 BTU down to about 9,000, and when the flame drops, so does the gas draw. One thing that burns fuel around the clock is a standing pilot; it sips a small, steady amount even when the fireplace is off, which is a separate line item worth knowing about.
